The Effect of the Social Resources of the Elderly Living Alone on the Suicidal Ideation and the Mediating Effect of the Stress by the Multiple Group Analysis: Comparison between Urban and Rural Areas

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of social resources of the living alone elderly on the suicidal ideation and the mediating effect of the stress and the difference between the urban elderly living alone and the rural elderly living alone. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 436 elderly people aged 65 years or older and analyzed by structural equation modeling. The main results of the study are as follows. First, the social resources of elderly living alone had an effect on suicidal ideation. Second, the stress of elderly living alone affects suicidal ideation. Third, the social resources of elderly living alone affected the suicidal ideation through stress. Fourth, as a result of multi-group analysis, regional (urban and rural) model comparisons showed that there were differences in the way in which community environment affected stress. In other words, the elderly living alone in the rural area had an influence on the social environment and social support all the way to stress and suicidal ideation, whereas the urban elderly people affected the social stress but the stress and suicidal ideation. Based on the results of this study, the mental health promotion plan of the elderly living alone was considered.
